March 2010 Kilimanjaro Expedition
February 24, 2010

Our climb began on March 1, 2010. We have just a small group on this climb

Andrea Zanglein from Elizabeth, PA: Andrea is currently volunteering at a local hospital in Moshi, Tanzania.

Danielle Randall-Bauer from Concord, NC

Plus our team of guides, porters and our chef, led by Northwest Voyageurs head guide Faustine.

March 3, 2010:

We received word from the group that they are doing well and resting comfortably at Mawenzi Tarn Hut, on this the third night of the climb. They are at 14,000 ft. now, having ascended nearly 7,500 ft. in the last three days. Tomorrow they will achieve the Saddle and slowly work their way towards Kibo Hut, the high camp and final resting spot before beginning their summit attempt.

March 4, 2010:

Danielle & Andrea have made it to Kibo Hut and are now resting and preparing for their assault on the summit of Kilimanjaro. They will leave at approximately midnight to begin what will likely be an 8-10 hour climb to Uhuru Peak. Stay tuned, we hope to have news of their attempt by early morning on March 5.

March 5, 2010:

CONGRATULATIONS! We have received word that both Danielle & Andrea attained the summit of Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa, this morning! Way to go!!!! They now begin the several hour descent back to the high camp...

Update at 7am Mountain Time (about 4pm local time): The group is on their way down. Danielle is not feeling very well and the group has decided to continue their descent all the way down to the Marangu gate with assistance of the guides and porters, in lieu of spending their last night on the mountain. At this moment they are on their way down, and the report we received is that they are safe and doing OK. We expect to hear from them in a few hours after they have safely reached the Marangu gate and are heading back to Moshi...

Update at 3pm Mountain Time (about 1am local time): The group is safe and back in Moshi, obviously exhausted from the huge day. Congratulations again Danielle & Andrea on a successful climb of Kilimanjaro!
