Day 1: Arrive at the Kilimanjaro airport in Moshi, Tanzania. Transportation is provided to our hotel in Moshi. We’ll enjoy a welcome dinner and pre-climb orientation. Parkview Hotel or Ameg Lodge, Moshi. (Meals: Dinner only)
Note: Day 1 is the first “official” day of this trip. The main international flight into Kilimanjaro on KLM arrives in the evening. If you have the time, we recommend flying in a day early, allowing you a day in town to recuperate from the long flight, and a day of cushion to deal with any luggage problems. If you choose to arrive a day early, we can arrange an extra night lodging and airport transportation. In this case, you would want to arrive the day BEFORE the official start date of the trip.
Days 2 & 3: After breakfast, we’ll depart for the beginning of our safari. Our first destination is the Tarangire National Park. Tarangire offers wildlife year-round water and exceptional wildlife viewing in the dry seasons. During our exploration, we’ll do game drives and can take an optional game walk to get away from the roads and vehicles a bit. Tarangire Luxury Tented Lodge. (Meals: B, L, D)
Days 4 & 5: After breakfast, we travel to the Serengeti National Park, one of the greatest wildlife viewing destinations in the world. Depending on the season, we may experience the migration of wildebeest, zebra and Thomson gazelle. In addition, we’ll view resident lion prides, cheetah, hyena, elephant, baboons, hippos, crocodiles, and a wide variety of hooved mammals…not to mention hundreds of species of birds. And we’ll spend some time searching for the elusive leopard. But the Serengeti is more than just a great wildlife viewing destination. It’s hard to explain if you haven’t been there…it invokes an overwhelming sense of the cycle of life and our very small place in it. Raw, unbounded and unmitigated life surrounds us everywhere we go. we depart to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where we can view lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. We’ll enjoy walking and game viewing activities, exploring the Olmati crater and interacting with the Masaai herdsmen who inhabit this area. Serengeti Serena or Sopa Lodge (Meals: B, L, D)
Days 6 & 7: As we depart the Serengeti, we’ll make a stop at the famous Olduvai Gorge in East Africa’s Great Rift Valley, where the oldest remains of human ancestors and primitive tool making were discovered by Louis Leakey in the 1950s. We’ll then continue on to the Ngorongoro Conservations Area. We’ll enjoy a hike to the Olmati Crater in the afternoon on the first day, followed by an all day game drive in the Ngorongoro Crater the next day. The crater is home to maybe the largest concentration of big game in the world. Huge resident herds of buffalo, zebra, and Thompson gazelle mix with the Big 5 (buffalo, lion, rhino, elephant and leopard). A permanent year-round water source attracts a variety of bird species and is home to hippos. The amount of wildlife is simply stunning and our crater game drive is the culmination of our safari in East Africa Ngorongoro Sopa or Serena Lodge (Meals: B, L, D)
Day 8: A morning cultural tour of a traditional Masaai Boma offers us the chance to meet and interact with the Masaai tribe. This pastoral tribe moves their herds seasonally with the movement of water, and they live amidst all the wildlife we’ve been viewing the last week on safari. After our tour, we’ll begin our trip back to the Kilimanjaro Airport. We stop en route to eat lunch and do a little shopping, and arrive at the Kia Lodge near the airport in the afternoon. Day rooms are arranged at the lodge to take a shower and rest before your flight departs in the evening. If you wish to extend your stay, we can arrange accommodations in Arusha or Moshi, in lieu of day room. (Meals: B, L)
