As mentioned previously, fly fishing for steelhead is a difficult art, mastered by very few anglers. If you wish to fly fish for steelhead on your trip, please plan to bring your own equipment. Recommendations are below. If you have not fished with a heavy-weight fly rod or spey rod before, feel free to bring your equipment but our recommendation will be to concentrate on spincasting which has a much better success rate.

Recommended fly fishing equipment for steelhead:

• Single-handed fly rod – minimum 8 weight, 9 foot and/or
• Spey rod – 8 to 9 weight
• Dry fly line with a 9 ft. sinking leader, 12 lb. test
• Minimum 100 yards backing, 20 lb. Dacron line
• Recommended flies – green-butt skunks, bunny leaches and spey flies in blues, blacks, and chartreuse patterns. We can stop at a local fly shop on the way to the river to pick up additional flies
• Waders and wading boots
• Optional – wading staff, inflatable pfd
