Hotels in Moshi
For our first night in Tanzania, and any subsequent nights planned in Moshi, we'll be staying at either the Parkview Hotel or Ameg Lodge in Moshi. These are the two nicest hotels in town, with convenient access to downtown but set in quieter settings. Kilimanjaro is visible from both hotels on a clear day.
Luxury Safari Lodges
When we stay in lodges on safari, we typically stay at the Serena or Sopa lodges. Both offer spectacular settings with cabins and buildings created to blend in with the natural surroundings. They offer exceptional dining and fine accommodations, including well appointed rooms with stunning views, comfortable beds with mosquito netting, and gorgeous grounds to enjoy an afternoon by the pool or reading a book.
Luxury Tented Lodges
Another favorite way to rest on safari, there are a variety of luxury tented lodges set throughout the National Parks we visit. These are permanent “lodges”, typically with each “room” being a large safari-style tent with a real bed with mosquito netting, stylish decoration and furnishings, en suite bath and shower with hot water and screened windows and doors. In addition, a larger structure serves as the dining and common area of the lodge. Most of these tented lodges are set in spectacular remote settings.
Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge
Perched on the jagged rim of the crater, wreathed in morning mist, camouflaged in river-stone and cloaked in indigenous creepers, the Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge is a triumph of ecological and architectural fusion. Sensitively constructed so as to take nothing from its environment whilst affording endless vistas over the heat-shimmering reaches of the crater below, the clustered boulder-built buildings of the Lodge hug the crater rim, linked by rope-lashed timber walkways that skirt the buttressed roots of ancient, liana-hung trees.
The interior, radiating out from the primeval log fire glowing at the heart of the Lodge, blends the concentrated hush of a game-viewing hide with the ochre, rust and charcoal images of a prehistoric cavern. Lit by flaming wall-lanterns, clad in gigantic volcanic boulders and decorated by the iron spears, bright-beaded robes and intricately carven artefacts of the Maasai, the Lodge is a unique blend of world-class luxury, timeless volcanic splendour and ethnic style. As for the views, from lilac-streaked sunrise, to indigo star-studded night, the immeasurably ancient Ngorongoro Crater delivers a theatre of vistas, most unchanged since the dawn of time.
Northwest Voyageurs Luxury Safari Camps
Probably our favorite way to sleep on safari. Our luxury mobile tented camps include large private safari tents for each party with beds and en suite toilet and shower facilities. We also have a large group dining tent with chairs and tables for meals and socializing.
Our mobile safari camps are set in remote areas of the National Parks we visit, allowing us to enjoy a more private and authentic safari experience.
Serengeti Sopa Lodge
The Serengeti Sopa Lodge is located in the Nyarboro Hills in the south west of the Serengeti National Park and is the only tourism development in this section of the Park. Being situated on the slopes of the hills the lodges offers magnificent views over the 14,763sq km (5,200sq. mile) expanse of the National Park, Tanzania's largest wildlife conservation area.
Opened in 1992, the lodge features 79 suites, each enjoying wall-to-wall carpeting, a private lounge with a mini bar, a bedroom with two queen size beds and ample room for a third, an en-suite bathroom with shaver sockets and a hair dryer, and a private verandah which offers stunning views over the plains. The lodge has direct-dial satellite telephone facilities as well as satellite television and wildlife-video-film options.
